Signatures & Dates
The process for a citizen-initiated Charter Amendment requires a lead time of approximately 16 months,
and requires 15% of registered voters to sign a petition to have it placed on the ballot.

So this process needs to be underway by July 2023 in order to meet all of the subsequent deadlines
Signature Goal
Our goal is to gather 90,000 signatures over a maximum 180 days ending in early January 2024.
Charter amendments required 15% of registered voters to have signed a Petition requesting it be placed on the ballot. There are 526,781 registered voters in the City of San Jose, therefore 15% equals 79,017.
Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters reviews and confirms all signatures are valid and also that there
are no duplicates.
If the total signatures are 10% over the required 79,017 (86,919) then the County ROV confirmation
step can be bypassed.
